| Sample Text | This manuscript consists of part of a Coptic primer by Irian Moftah (1826-1886). Useful phrases are included in it, as the Coptic phrases are in the left column and the Arabic ones are in the right column. Key avoids going into the complexities of language and morphology, and it follows that, in addition to his use of simple, everyday phrases, the book is aimed at schoolchildren or young students of theology rather than those who are advanced. Although the book has been written for Arabic speakers, it does not assume that students are familiar with the intricacies of classical Arabic grammar. There are no religious or Biblical references and the author frequently uses colloquial Arabic to explain expressions such as 'Wash your hands' or 'Never taste the arak [the local alcoholic drink made from dates or raisins]' or 'Trim the candle [the wither].' Expressions and dialogue are grouped into themes such as 'On the house' or 'On the sleep' or 'On the food.' |
