| Sample Text | This sculptural work by political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902) celebrates the emancipation of Southern slaves at the end of the Civil War. Nast painted a picture that expresses his optimism about the future of free blacks in the United States of America. The scene in the center shows the interior view of a freedman's house with the family gathered around the 'Union' wooden oven. The father puts his young son on his knee while his wife and others look on. There is a banjo and a picture of Abraham Lincoln hanging between the mantelpiece and the window |
