| Sample Text | This 19th-century manuscript is a study of sundial timekeeping, the mathematical concept of calculating the perpendicularity of a shadow for timekeeping purposes. The relatively recent history of the work bears witness to the great and lasting importance attributed to the Islamic world in calculating time by observing the lengths of shadows. The use of timekeeping using sundials and sundials was thought to be the most accurate religious method for calculating the correct timing of prayer, given that religious texts had already presented the noon and afternoon prayers according to the lengths of the shadows. This study is dedicated to a specific type of sundial, which is the oblique or vertical sundial, but Islamic books record a huge number of studies that dealt with the vertical sundial (known as the marble or simple sundial). |
