Showing the Arabian Peninsula, the Kingdom of Persia, Afghanistan, and Baluchistan, this map dates from 1852 from the New World Atlas produced by Philadelphia publisher Thomas Cowperthwaite & Company. The provinces of Persia, including Iraq, Fars, Khorasan, and Kerman, are shown in different colors. The Arabian Peninsula is divided into the traditional territories used by European geographers, namely Arabia Petraea, Arabia Felix, and Arabia Sahara. Yemen and Oman are shown along with the sites of cities, mountains, monuments, important wells and fresh water sources in the Arabian Desert. Afghanistan includes Balkh Province in the north of the country, which was occupied by Dost Muhammad Khan, Emir of Afghanistan, in 1850.
