This map was designed by Thomas Hutchins (1730-1789) to accompany his Topographical Account of Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and North Carolina, also published in London in 1778. A New Jersey native, Hutchins fought in the French and Indian Wars with the militia. Hutchins became a frontiers expert, and was known for his skill in the fields of land surveying, cartography, and geography. This hand-colored map displays state boundaries, towns, forts, roads, Indian villages, Indian trails or trails, rivers, streams, waterfalls, boat landings, springs, mountain reefs, and mineral deposits. The map includes descriptive text and notes about areas with fertile, arable land. Hutchins compiled the map from several sources. The map was generally very popular, but some contemporaries expressed their dissatisfaction with the inaccurate measurements of the longitude and latitude of many frontier towns, the location of Indian towns, and the courses of some rivers.
