Sample Text	Many Arab scholars were interested in studying the correct calculation of time. The importance of this in Islam lies in the need to know the correct calculation of the length of days, months and years, necessary to perform the five daily prayers and to celebrate holidays at the correct hours, days and months for the lunar year. This nineteenth-century edition of a work by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Latif al-Thabiti begins with some comments on the signs of the zodiac, followed by a discussion of the twenty-eight houses of the moon—the parts of the zodiac that the moon passes through in its orbit around the globe. Although the differences between astrology and astronomy were already known in ancient times, the presence of elements of these two fields side by side in the same work, as in this manuscript, was considered very common in the Middle Ages. The text looks at how the solar and lunar systems are used to calculate the months of the Islamic calendar. It includes tables showing the Arab years and their corresponding Coptic years, and highlights the difference in dates.
