Traveling log book of Werner von Boltenstern containing handwritten statements, official stamps, and permissions to stay from local officials - such as police stations, immigration departments, district and municipal offices - with dates and locations of his arrival and departure in numerous cities and countries from 1929 to 1950. Statements and records are written in various languages, such as French, Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, and English. Some of the official stamps are from Angra do Heroísmo, Guinea-Bissau, Bathurst Gambia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Guinée française, Half-Assini, Sekondi, Lagos, Ibadan, Pointe-Noire, Lobito, Benguella, Ovamboland, South-West Africa, South Africa, Waterberg, Rhodesia, B.S.A., Dedza, Nyasaland, Mozambique, Tunduru, Songea, Dodoma, Zanzibar, Mombasa, Nairobi, Malindi, Italian Somalia, British Somaliland, Eritrea, Kordofan, Alexandria, Ramadi, Baghdad, Bassorah, Tehran, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Hubli, Bangalore, Allahabad, Lahore, Akyab, Thayetmyo, Kalaw, Thaton, Djiring, Thua Thien, Tonkin, Hong Kong, Pampanga, Banaue, Abulug, Davao, Batangas, Tarakan, Shanghai, Taipei, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, California. Pages with contents are included in the digital object; blank pages are omitted., A German citizen born in Berlin in 1904, Werner von Boltenstern undertook his world travel in 1929, journeying through Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, and China. In 1939, he reached Shanghai, where he lived until 1949. Werner von Boltenstern left Shanghai in 1949 and eventually went to the United States in 1950, where he settled in Los Angeles. His identity documents list his occupation as photographer, and he probably earned money through this means. His ten-year residence in Shanghai resulted in a large number of photographs of the Jewish refugee community there.
