Notes
Malva asks why her father, Pablo Neruda, abandoned her as a child. The simple answer may be: He can no longer bear the suffering of caring for her while she is afflicted with a disease doomed to death, while he is the adventurous lover and rebel for the people... and “every moment of his time he spends saving my life is a lost moment of literature and eternity.” But it does not justify him concealing her existence after she tried to search for a mention of her in his famous poems or even his memoirs. She brings up Socrates to argue with Neruda, and he replies: “The great Socrates: Who are you to tell me what I should have done with my daughter? Before the judges, you rejected the alternatives available to get out of your case and preferred a cup of poison to taking care of your children. Difficult questions remain pressing on Malva: Does my father love me? Do I love him?... “I will never win my father's love, I will never get it back; "The only chance this thing could have happened during our lifetime has passed."
