Notes	Following the victory in 1945, Britain remained dominant in the Middle East, but the motives behind its desire for control were changing. The British were unable to confront Arab and Jewish nationalism, so they were gone within a decade. But this is not the whole story. What ultimately accelerated Britain's exit was the uncompromising position of the United States, which was determined to replace the British in the Middle East. The British did not surrender gracefully to this attack. Using newly declassified records and long-forgotten memoirs, James Barr undermines the traditional interpretation of that historical period in the Middle East.
