Notes	The Ismailis have had a long, complex and eventful history originating in the Imami Shi'i tradition of Islam and dating back to the 8th century AD. In the Middle Ages, the Ismailis divided into two main groups, each of which followed a different line of imams or spiritual leaders. The bulk of the Ismailis, the Nizari, now have a line of imams represented in modern times by the Aga Khans, while the Tayyibi Ismailis, known as Bohras in South Asia, were led by preachers (who were representatives of their hidden imams). This collection of studies represents the first scholarly research attempt to conduct a comprehensive survey of the modern history of the two branches of Ismailis since the mid-nineteenth century. For the Nizari Ismailis, it covers various thematic issues and topics, and a separate section is devoted to the modern history of the Tayyibi Bohras and the developments that took place within this community.
