Notes	From Algeria to Syria, passing through Tunisia, Yemen, Libya, Egypt, Palestine, and France, Burga narrates how his research path, in order to understand Islamist otherness, led him to sculpt his own analytical tools. Recalling his meetings with a number of Islamists, he shows how their motives were worldly and political rather than religious, moving away from essentialist interpretations that were stubborn in searching within the seventh century Qur’an for the keys to contemporary political Islam. In this work, Burga continues a research path that he began four decades ago, and contrasts his first hypotheses with the turmoil that accompanied the seasons of the “Arab Spring” and the emergence of the jihadi presence. He also includes his observations in their historical contexts, to provide us with valuable illumination on the conditions for overcoming this “Islamist challenge.”
