"The History of the Two Indias was conceived by Abbot Raynal as a meeting and gathering point between philosophers and royal administrators. A sort of platform for ministerial policy, the History of the Two Indias aimed to overcome the divide and rupture that had occurred during the 1750s between the "philosophers" and the monarchy of Louis XV. In order to reconstruct the genesis of the History of the Two Indias and its reception throughout the 18th century century, the cultural and political context of France after the Peace of Paris (1763) was taken into account. Coming from the international conference "Around Abbé Raynal", organized in Pisa in February 2016, the volume reconstructs the discourse on empires and trade which was developed in the History of the Two Indies, as well as the role played by the colonies in Raynal's work. enriches this work which resembles the contributions of researchers whose skills embrace different fields: from the philology of texts to political history, from literary history to the history of ideas." --
