"Léon Azoulay: kentañ sonenroller ar brezhoneg (1900)" [Léon Azoulay: first sound collector of the Breton language (1900)], presented in September 2021, under the direction of Hervé Bihan..:, 51 cylinders of Pathé or other types, the majority preserved in their original box (approximately recording). :, 51 cylinders of Pathé or other types, the majority preserved in their original box (approximately registration). The BnF keeps in its collections the cylinders recorded by Léon Azoulay during the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris. These are a priori recordings after the 1900 collection (according to the few dates given by the collector). In fact, the cylinders presented here do not appear in the inventory that Azoulay drew up in the Journal de la Société d'Anthropologie de Paris in July 1902. In the bulletin of November 1902, Azoulay wrote a technical article on the latest advances in the phonogram entitled “An important progress for phonographic museums. Electroplastic reproduction of phonograms. Unalterable metal molds. ". This new technology would make it possible to copy original cylinders. Azoulay had already communicated in August 1902 on the subject. In the articles he published in 1902, Azoulay specified that after having contacted the American company which produced this new cylinder format, he decided for financial reasons to develop these technical tests himself and reported on them in the article cited above. In many cylinders of this unpublished collection, we can hear the voice of Doctor Azoulay who specifies that he carried out the "molding" and the "galvano[plasty]" himself. We therefore assume that the unpublished recordings in the collection presented here were partly made or modified to experiment with new techniques around the reproduction of the phonographic cylinder with the aim of allowing copies to be made. The collection is very varied, composed of traditional songs and music, declarations and communiqués, interviews for ethnographic and linguistic studies, prayers, stories, spontaneous words and technical tests.
