The manuscripts come largely from religious establishments in the province, suppressed during the revolutionary period. Others were part of the firm sold, without any reason for speculation, in 1847, to the city of Nevers, by Mr. Gallois, then conductor of bridges and roads, since appointed curator of the Museum, and distinguished collector. More recently the city purchased three of these manuscripts, not the least interesting for local history, at public sales, in Paris and Nevers. The others came to him from private donations. These various provenances have been precisely indicated for each manuscript of known origin. This collection of autographs contains pieces of very diverse origin: some come from the collection of the bibliophile and historian Georges de Soultrait (1822-1888) or the collection of the numismatist and archaeologist Henri Sarriau (1859-1907), others were given to the municipal library of Nevers mixed with around twenty facsimiles. A certain number of pieces (MSG 41 – n°36 to n°42) apparently come from the archives of the Le Peletier d’Aunay family, whose descendants held the castle of Aunay-en-Bazois (Nièvre) until 1963. We do not know how they entered the collections of the municipal library of Nevers., Gift of Mr. Luminet, ex-military interpreter in Algeria.. This collection of autographs contains pieces of very diverse origins: some come from the collection of the bibliophile and historian Georges de Soultrait (1822-1888) or from the collection of the numismatist and archaeologist Henri Sarriau (1859-1907), others were donated to the library municipal of Nevers mixed with around twenty facsimiles.
