Biyografi veya Tarihçe
Henry Corbin (1903-1978) est un des penseurs français les plus importants du XXe siècle. Il révéla à l’Occident la gnose chiite, à travers le magnum opus du Maître de l’illumination ( Šayḫ al-išrāq ) intitulé Livre de la sagesse Orientale ( Kitāb ḥikmat al-išrāq ). Ses œuvres sont axées sur la gnose et la spiritualité des grands penseurs islamiques : Avicenne, Ibn ‘Arabi. Dans le cadre de ses recherches, H. Corbin a été amené à séjourner en Turquie (Istanbul) et en Iran. Ces deux pays sont considérés comme les deux grandes réserves des manuscrits orientaux dans le monde. Lors de ses séjours, il put se procurer des reproductions photographiques de manuscrits de différentes bibliothèques, formant ainsi un fonds des reproductions très riche. Son amitié avec W. Ivanow (1886-1970) qui vécut quarante ans en Inde lui a également permis de faire réaliser des reproductions photographiques des manuscrits des Ismaéliens dans ce pays, et d'en faire copier d'autres par des copistes indiens. Tous les manuscrits reproduits s’inscrivent dans les grands thèmes de recherche qui intéressaient H. Corbin : la théosophie orientale, l’ismaélisme, le soufisme et l’alchimie mystique.
