Le 6 mai 1931, L'Exposition coloniale internationale de Paris est inaugurée par le chef d'état Gaston Doumergue . Cette exposition occupe plus de cent dix hectares du bois de Vincennes, autour du lac Daumesnil. A l'occasion de cette exposition, 368 enregistrements sonores des "musiques et parlers coloniaux" sont réalisés par l'Institut de Phonétique et le Musée de la parole et du geste de l'Université de Paris (alors dirigés par Hubert Pernot ), avec le soutien de la firme discographique Pathé ; de ces enregistrements, 184 disques 78 tours sont produits, représentant environ 20 heures d'écoute. Cette collecte est réalisée entre la fin juin et le 6 novembre 1931 par Philippe Stern et son assistante Mady Humbert-Lavergne . Parallèlement à ces enregistrements sonores, le musée de la Parole commande au photographe Paul Pivot un reportage sur les interprètes et les musiciens présents. En octobre 1931, Paul Pivot réalise, 157 clichés, pris dans l’enceinte même de l’Exposition et au camp militaire de Saint-Maur.
