Biyografi veya Tarihçe André Chamson (1900-1983) grandit dans les Cévennes. Il fait des études secondaires au lycée d'Alès, puis à Montpellier. Il poursuit ses études à la Sorbonne où il fonde le groupe des Vorticistes, menés par un esprit de liberté et de curiosité. En 1920, il réussit le concours de l'Ecole des Chartes lui permettant d'être nommé archiviste-paléographe. Dans l'entre-deux-guerres, André Chamson joue un rôle notable parmi les intellectuels engagés. Il milite dans les années 30 aux côtés des partisans du Front populaire et fonde en 1935, avec Jean Guéhenno et Andrée Viollis, l'hebdomadaire Vendredi . Il soutient les Républicains pendant la guerre d'Espagne avant de s'engager comme capitaine dans les Chasseurs Alpins. En 1940, il est démobilisé et suit l'exode des chefs-d'œuvre du musée du Louvre, évacuées avant l'arrivée des troupes allemandes à Paris. Pendant l'Occupation, résistant, il co-fonde la Brigade Alsace-Lorraine avec André Malraux, brigade qui prend une grande part aux combats menés pour la Libération. Nommé après la victoire des Alliés conservateur du Petit-Palais, élu à la présidence du Pen Club en 1956, André Chamson se vit proposer en 1959, par André Malraux, la direction des Archives de France. Il siégea également au conseil d'administration de l'ORTF. Mais il fut aussi et surtout un remarquable romancier à qui l'on doit une œuvre empreinte de son amour pour les Cévennes et inspirée, pour une grande partie, par son attachement aux souvenirs et aux malheurs de ses ancêtres huguenots. On peut citer : Roux le bandit (1925), Les Hommes de la route (1927), Le Crime des justes (1928), Histoires de Tabusse (1928), Héritages (1932), L’Année des vaincus (1934), La Galère (1939), Quatre mois (1940), Le Puits des miracles (1945), L’Homme qui marchait devant moi (1948), La Neige et la Fleur (1951), Le Chiffre de nos jours (1954), Nos Ancêtres les Gaulois (1958), Le Rendez-vous des espérances (1961), La Superbe (1967), La Tour de Constance (1970). Il est élu à l'Académie française le 17 mai 1956, par 18 voix - celles entre autres de Jules Romains, André Maurois et Georges Duhamel - au fauteuil du baron Seillière.
