Biographical dictionary of the city of Damascus, written on the model of the Biographical Dictionary of Baghdâd. According to Ibn Khallikân, the work of ʿAlî ibn Moḥammad ibn ʿAsâkir, who died in 571 A.H. (1176 A.D.), consisted of eighty parts or volumes; but the copy in the library of ʿAṭef Pasha, in Constantinople, fills only seven folio volumes, each of which is divided into three sections. The present ms. is the last volume of the work. The first and last leaves are missing. The volume begins in the middle of the notice by Yazid ibn Yazid ibn Djabir. After the letter ى, which ends with the article Yoûnos al-Madînî al-Kâtib, come the notices of the people generally designated by their surnames. This part begins with Abou Aḥmad. The ms. stops at the beginning of the article Abou Moḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbâs al-ʿAttâr.
