See the typewritten notices of Georges Vajda for the Arabic manuscripts 2400 to 2759. It is a treatise on ethics, composed of a large number of maxims in prose and verse, classified in the order of the subjects, and divided into sixty chapters, called مشارع "watering holes". One of the last chapters, the fifty-fifth, is dated to the year 596 A.H. (1199-1200 A.D.). The different copies of this work derive from a copy, made on the autograph, by an inhabitant of Spain, named ʿAbd al-Monʿim ibn ʿOmar ibn Ḥasanî al-Djilyânî (from Djiliana, a fortified castle near Cádiz), who died in 602 AH (1205-1206 AD), or in 603, who, among other works, had written an account of travels in the Orient. This writer says, at the beginning of our work: كتبت هذه النسخة من نسخة كتبت بخط المصنف “I wrote this copy after another which was in the hand of the author”. It is therefore wrong that Hadji-Khalfa (t. I, p. 219) attributes this work to ʿAbd al-Monʿim al-Djilyânî.
