“The Position of Reason, Knowledge and the Scientist in Relation to the Lord of the Worlds and His Slave Messengers” is a monumental and one of the most significant works of Mustafa Sabri, in which he explores in detail and defines the place and role of human reason (al-'aql), scientific knowledge (al-'ilm) and the scientist (al-'alim) in the system of Islamic belief.
The book is a detailed apology for traditional Islam and a deep criticism of various philosophical movements (especially materialism and positivism) and modernist approaches in Islamic thought, which, according to the author, distort the true understanding:
- The nature and attributes of Allah Almighty (Lord of the Worlds).
- Status, miracles and mission of the prophets (His messenger slaves).
- The relationship between divine revelation (vahy) and human reason.
Mustafa Sabri defends the primacy and authority of divine revelation in matters of faith (aqida) and metaphysics, polemicizing with those who absolutize the capabilities of the human mind or try to over-rationalize Islamic dogmas under the influence of Western philosophy. The work aims to establish and defend classical Islamic doctrines, in particular the Ash'ari/Maturidi Kalama school, in the face of the intellectual challenges of the 20th century. It is a fundamental work for understanding conservative Islamic thought and its response to modernism. |
