Notes “Al-Manar fi Usul al-Fiqh” (المنار في أصول الفقه – “The Lamp in the Fundamentals of Jurisprudence”) by Abul-Barakat Abdullah ibn Ahmad al-Nasafi (d. 710 AH/1310 CE) is a fundamental and one of the most influential works on usul al-fiqh (the foundations of Islamic jurisprudence) in the Hanafi madhhab. The book is different: - Brevity and clarity: An-Nasafi presents complex methodological issues in a concise and accessible way, which made the book a popular study. - Systematic: The work is structured and covers key topics of usul al-fiqh, such as the sources of Islamic law (Koran, Sunnah, ijma, qiyas, etc.), rules for their interpretation, methods for deriving legal norms (istinbat), conditions for ijtihad (independent legal judgment) and other methodological aspects. - Authority: Al-Manar quickly gained recognition and for centuries served as the basic educational text (matn) for students of Hanafi law. - Basis for commentaries: Due to its conciseness and depth, the book became the basis for numerous commentaries (shuruh) and super-commentaries (hawashi) from subsequent generations of Hanafi scholars, who clarified, detailed and expanded its provisions.
