Notes An-nihaya fi gharib al-hadith wa-l-asar (The Cornerstone Dictionary of Unusual Words from Hadith and Obsolete Words) is a four-volume dictionary of words found in the Hadith, or sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, compiled by the medieval scholar Majd al-Din ibn al-Athir (1149−1210). This is a specialized index of unusual or rare words from hadith, supplemented by terms from the Qur'an and early Islamic history. In its time, this work was recognized as a significant contribution to lexicography and was included in the authoritative work Lisan al-Arab (The Arabic Language) by Ibn Manzur (died 1311 or 1312). The book contains a note with a list of errors discovered in the work "Lisan al-Arab" based on data from Ibn al-Athir's dictionary. Ibn al-Athir's family - father and sons - is traditionally associated with the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, where they taught, wrote and acted as local court literati. They often traveled on diplomatic missions. The main text is accompanied by marginal comments by the famous Egyptian scholar Jalaluddin al-Suyuti (1445−1505). After a period of teaching in Cairo, al-Suyuti spent a significant part of his life in seclusion. He became famous for his commentaries on the works of earlier scholars, and as the author of Jami al-jawami (Collection of Collections), a generally accepted reference book on hadith.
