Notes The book “Instruction for the Community on the Confirmation of the New Moons,” written by the eminent Islamic scholar Muhammad Bakhyt al-Muti'i al-Hanafi, who was also the Qadi of Iskanderiya, is the most important work on the issues of the Islamic calendar and determining the beginning of the lunar months. In this work, the author deeply explores the Shariah foundations and astronomical principles associated with observing the new moon (hilal). Determining the new moon is critical to establishing the start and end dates of Islamic holidays and rituals such as Ramadan (the month of fasting) and Eid al-Adha. The book examines the various opinions of Islamic jurists on this issue, analyzes the reliability of evidence of moon sightings, and discusses the role of astronomical calculations in Islamic law. This fundamental study is an indispensable source for ulema, students and anyone interested in the problems of Islamic jurisprudence and astronomy.
