Notes The book “Rihlya Ibn Fadlan ila bilyad at-Turk wa ar-Rus wa as-Sakalyaba” (Ibn Fadlan’s journey to the countries of the Turks, Rus and Slavs) is a unique historical and geographical work written by the Arab traveler and diplomat Ahmad bin Fadlan. This work is an invaluable source of information about the peoples of Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the beginning of the 10th century. Ibn Fadlan was sent by the Baghdad caliph al-Muqtadir as secretary of the embassy to the ruler of Volga Bulgaria in 921. In his “Richla” he describes in detail the route of his journey, starting from Baghdad and ending with the banks of the Volga. The author meticulously records his observations about the life, customs, beliefs and political structure of various Turkic tribes, Khazars, and also, most importantly, the Rus and Slavs. His records contain some of the earliest and most detailed descriptions of the burial rites of the Viking Rus on the Volga, their trading activities, social structure and hygiene. Preparation of the publication and foreword: Shakir Lu'aibi.
