Notes The book Maqlya'a al-Bid'a (The Eradicator of Innovations) is a theological work written in 1313 AH (1895) by the famous Afghan Hanafi scholar Sheikh 'Abd al-Qayyim Pasha. In this treatise, the author provides a reasoned refutation of the innovation that spread in those years in Afghanistan and on the North-Western border - the so-called “Salat al-Qada al-‘umri” (prayer for universal compensation for missed prayers) at the farewell Friday prayer of Ramadan. Sheikh Abd al-Qayyim zealously opposed this innovation, conducting theological debates with his contemporaries, in particular in his native village of Bam Heil. He was able to convincingly refute the arguments of supporters of this practice, defending the true foundations of Islamic Sharia. A counterbalance to this work was the book “At-tashrikh ad-daruri fi istikhbab al-qada al-‘umri” by Ismatallah al-Fishawri, in which the author, on the contrary, supports the practice under discussion. However, as noted, this newly introduced form of prayer was eventually abandoned and the Sunni orthodox position was restored, indicating the success of Sheikh Al-Qayyim's efforts. The book will be useful to students of Islamic theology, as well as to anyone interested in studying issues of bid'a, tradition and reform in Muslim society.
