| Sample Text | Islamic scholars have set certain basic conditions for a valid tafsir. Any tafsir, which is not aligned with these principles, should be viewed with great caution if not completely rejected. Among the most important conditions are the following: Mufasir must: Be of sound faith (aqeedah), Well-educated in the field of the Arabic language and must know its language rules, Well-versed in other sciences that are connected to the study of the Qur'an (e.g. ilmar-riwaya, the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad), that he is capable of accurately understanding the text, that he refrains from expressing only his opinion, that tafsir begins with the text of the Qur'an, seeks guidance from the words and explanations of the Prophet, that he refers to the reports of the Sahaba (Muhammad's companions), to take into account the reports of the generation after Muhammad, to seek the opinion of other prominent scholars.
