| Sample Text | The genre of Arabic satirical poetry is known as hijja. Satire was introduced into Arabic prose literature in the ninth century by the African-Arab author al-Jahiz. While dealing with serious subjects, which are now known as anthropology, sociology and psychology, he applied a satirical approach based on the premise that it would be far more interesting and therefore a stronger effect, no matter how serious a subject, if one spiced up the formalism just a little by throwing in a few amusing anecdotes or throwing out some witty or paradoxical observations. He was well aware that, considering some new themes in prose works, he should use the vocabulary of nature better known in hijja, satirical poetry. Year of publication: 1821/22. |
