| Sample Text | Together with the shair, and often as his poetic apprentice, there was a ravi or declaimer. The ravi's task was to memorize the songs and to recite them with explanations and probably often with embellishments. Such a tradition enabled the transmission of poetic works and was later adopted by hafiz for memorizing the Qur'an. In certain periods, there were unbroken chains of famous poets, each of whom trained a Ravi as a bard who would promote his verses and then take over from them and continue the poetic tradition. For example, Tufail trained Awas ibn Hajar, Awas trained Zuhayr ibn Abi Sulma, Zuhayr trained his son Ka'b bin Zuhayr, Ka'b trained al-Hutayah, al-Hutayah trained Jamil Butayna and Jamil Kutahir Az.
