In the technical sense, the word tafsir is used to explain, interpret and comment on the Qur'an, which includes all forms of acquiring knowledge that contribute to its correct understanding, explain its meaning and explain its legal implications. The word mufasir (pl. mufasirun) is a term used for a person who deals with tafsir, i.e. he is an exegete or interpreter. The word tawil which is also used in this context comes from the root aval and also means to explain, to interpret. In a technical sense, it also refers to the explanation and interpretation of the Qur'an.
