| Sample Text | The initial division over inheritance rights was enough to lay the groundwork for continuing sectarian divisions. These divisions were exacerbated and strengthened by the conflict and unrest that continued to erode the Islamic community in its first decades. The first civil war took place after the assassination of the third Sunni caliph, Uthman. A caliph with a mixed reputation due to accusations of ineffective leadership and nepotism was captured in his own home and brutally murdered. Up until that point, Ali had mostly followed the caliphate, so Uthman's supporters accused Ali of not avenging his murdered predecessor. Year of publication: 1701. |
