Sample Text Of the 29 Proto-Semitic consonants, only one was lost: */ʃ/, which merged with /s/. A number of other consonants have also changed quality, but have retained distinctiveness. The original */p/ changed to /f/ and */ɡ/ was palatalized to /ɡʲ/ or /ɟ/ at the time of the Qur'an and /d͡ʒ/, /ɡ/ and /ʒ/ in Modern Standard Arabic. The original voiceless alveolar lateral fricative */ɬ/ becomes /ʃ/. Its emphatic counterpart is considered by Arabs to be the most unusual voice in Arabic (hence classical Arabic is called luġatu 'ḍ-ḍād or the language of the letter dad); in most modern dialects it has become an emphatic plosive /dˤ/ which has lost laterality. Year of publication: 1589.
