Sample Text	The Shia tradition regarding Ali's attitude towards the caliphs differs from the Sunni tradition. They maintain that Ali, in order to avoid civil war and cause the downfall of the young Islamic empire, refrained from fighting for the forfeited rights to the caliphate. For the first few months after the prophet's death, he remained in isolation and collected and documented the Koran. He never accepted any caliph as is explicitly mentioned in many of his writings and sayings (now a compilation under the name Nahju l-balaga). However, he supported them in making several critical ruling decisions for the wider interest of the community. Umar ibn Khattab is reported to have stated, "Had it not been for Ali, Umar would not have survived."
