| Sample Text | Based on Sunni tradition, the ailing Muhammad designated longtime companion Abu Bakr as his successor when he asked him to lead the community in group prayer. In the traditional sense, the role of leading in prayer is interpreted by Sunnis as an act that marks Abu Bakr as the rightful heir to the prophet's authority. After Muhammad's death, a group of refugees from Mecca (the Prophet's birthplace) and the Medinans who supported them (called ansar, in Arabic helpers, supporters) gathered in a place called Sakifah and elected Abu Bakr as their new leader.
