In a sense, Muhammad adopted a solitary meditative practice for several weeks each year in a cave on Mount Hira near Mecca. Islamic tradition says that in 610 AD, during one of his stays on Hira, the angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammad and commanded him to recite the following verses: Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of your Lord and the One who loves you, Who created- Created man from (only) one clot of coagulated blood: Proclaim! And your Lord is the Most Generous, - He Who taught (the use of) the pen, - He taught the man who did not know. Koran, Sura 96 (Al-Alak), verses 1-5 After returning home, Muhammad was comforted and reassured by Khadijah and her Christian cousin, Warak ibn Naufal. After receiving the first revelations, he was deeply distracted and determined to commit suicide. He also feared that others would reject his claims because they thought he was possessed by demons.
