Sample Text To these two Qur'anic heirs, the mother and the father, the grandmother on the mother's side and the grandfather on the father's side were added by analogy. The grandmother on the mother's side replaces the mother in the latter's absence. "...but if he has brothers (or sisters), then one-sixth belongs to the mother." (Qur'an 4:11) There is agreement on the opinion that the word ahwatun used in the Qur'anic text denotes two or more brothers or sisters of any kind. This includes any combination of birth brothers, aunts and uncles, and maternal siblings if two or more mean that the mother inherits one-sixth of the property. "And for you is one-half of what a woman leaves behind if she has no children, but if she leaves a child, then to you is one-fourth of what she leaves behind..." (Qur'an 4:12)
