| Sample Text | Just one sincere recitation of the shahada is all that is needed for an individual to become a convert to Islam based on the most traditional schools (madhabas). Say the phrase ashhadu anna (or similar) twice = I testify that or I am a witness that. It is very often omitted. The Shiites pronounce the kalima like this: "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa-llaha, wa ašhadu anna Muhammad(an) Abduhu wa rasuluhu wa ašhadu anna mulana Ali-yyun wali-yyu-llah.", and the oath now means: I testify that there is no deity but God and I testify that Muhammad is God's servant and messenger and I testify that Ali is God's wali (representative). The last phrase is optional for all Shias. They believe that Ali's walayat is self-evident and that it is not necessary to pronounce it. Year of publication: 1714. |
