| Sample Text | The Shi'ites maintain bitter narrations of Muslims being forced to accept Abu Bakr as their ruler and a widespread bloodshed was unleashed on those that opposed or tried to remain neutral. Sunni accounts say that after a period during which he withdrew from public affairs, Ali eventually decided to cooperate with Abu Bakr and give his public submission. One version of the story is found in an oral tradition collected by Muhammad al-Bukhari. Ali's cooperation is evident from the fact that he assisted all his three predecessors in making official decisions. |
