| Sample Text | Nahj al-balagha is a work whose aim is to present Ali's oratory, but it does not collect all of Ali's sermons. Instead, only segments of great literary value are included. Shiites consider the collection authentic even though it is not included in their hadith books. A commentary on the Nahj al-balaga by Ibn Abi al-Hadid (d. 656/1258) is widely distributed. Although some Sunni scholars do not consider the book to be an authentic work, numerous eminent scholars and jurists vouch for the authenticity of some of the sermons included in the book. According to one Shia source, the first to suspect that Ali was its author was Ibn Khallikan, a Sunni scholar. |
