Sample Text Within the Hanafi school, there are various opinions about smoking tobacco. Shurunbulali (d. 1069 A.H.) in his Sharh al-Wahbaniyya says that selling and smoking tobacco is forbidden, ie. unlawful (haram). Al-Luknawi (d. 1304 A.H.) in his Tarwih al-Janan bi HukmSharb ad-Dukhan and Zajrarbabar-Rayyan an sharb ad-dukhan says that smoking tobacco is diliked (makruh). Finally, Abd al-Ghani an-Nabulsi (d. 1143 A.H.) in his As-sulhbayn al-Ikhwan fi ibahahsharb ad-dukhan says that unlawful and disliked are two legal rulings which require a proof, and there is no proof for it. Smoking tobacco is not established that it intoxicates, nor that it causes harm. The basis of the case is permissibility. Year of publishing: 1748.
