| Sample Text | The two groups also disagree about Ali's relationship to Abu Bakr and the two caliphs who succeeded him: Umar and Uthman ibn Affan. The Sunnis tend to emphasize Ali's acceptance and support of their rule, while the Shiites claim that he distanced himself from them and prevented him from fulfilling the religious duty that Muhammad had assigned him. Sunnis claim, if Ali is the legitimate heir appointed by God, then it would be his duty as the leader of the Islamic community to wage war against those people (Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman) the witness would not fulfill what was established.
