| Sample Text | Traditions about the life of Muhammad and the history of early Islam were transmitted largely orally for more than a hundred years after Muhammad's death in 632 AD. Islamic historians say that the caliph Uthman ibn Affan (the third orthodox caliph or third successor of Muhammad, who previously served as Muhammad's secretary) is widely believed to have urged Muslims to record hadiths, just as Muhammad instructed a follower to write down his words and actions. Uthman's efforts were cut short soon after he was assassinated in 656 CE. in the hands of grieving soldiers.
