| Sample Text | Muslims believe that Muhammad's followers, called the Sahabah, after each revelation he dictated, memorized the Koran accurately, recited it, and recorded it accurately. Shortly after Muhammad's death, the Koran was compiled into one book by order of the first caliph Abu Bakr and at the suggestion of his future successor, Umar. Hafsa, Muhammad's widow and Umar's daughter, was entrusted with that Qur'anic text after the second caliph Umar died. When Uthman, the third caliph, began to notice certain differences in the Arabic dialect, he asked Hafsa to allow him to use the text in her possession to establish a standard dialect, the dialect of the Quraysh tribe, known today as Fusha (modern standard Arabic). |
