Sample Text Muslims believe that the Koran is a book of divine guidance and direction for mankind and consider the original Arabic text to be the literal word of God revealed to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel over a period of twenty-three years and consider the Koran to be God's last revelation to mankind. Wahj in the Islamic and Quranic sense means the work of God who speaks to an individual, conveying the message to a larger number of listeners. The process by which the divine message comes to the heart of God's messenger is tanzil (to descend from above) or nuzul (to descend). As the Koran says: "We sent him (God) down with truth and he came down with truth." It signifies positive religion, the letter of revelation under the dictation of an angel to a prophet. It means to cause that revelation to descend from the higher world. Based on the hadith, the verses were sent down in special circumstances known as asbab an-nuzul (causes of descent). However, in this sense God is never the one who descends. Year of publication: 1738/1739.
