| Sample Text | The spoken varieties of Classical and Modern Standard Arabic differ not only in grammar but also in pronunciation. Outside of the Arabian Peninsula, there is a large linguistic divide between sedentary varieties, largely urban varieties that grew out of the languages of military camps that were built in places that were first conquered, and Bedouin varieties that were originally spoken by Bedouin nomads that filtered in decades and centuries later. Within the Arabian Peninsula and in Iraq two types are less prominent; but the language of the urbanized Hijaz, at the very least, leaves a strong impression of a conservative sedentary variety.
