Sample Text During the century after the death of Osman I, the Ottoman Empire began to expand into the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkan Peninsula. They took Thessaloniki from the Venetians in 1387. The Ottoman victory in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 finally marked the end of Serbian rule in that area and paved the way for Ottoman expansion within Europe. The Battle of Nikopol in 1396 is generally considered to be the last large-scale crusade in the Middle Ages, which failed in an attempt to stop the advance of the victorious Ottomans. With the expansion of Ottoman rule on the Balkan Peninsula, the strategic conquest of Constantinople became a goal of essential importance. The empire established its rule over almost all the former Byzantine possessions that surrounded the city, but the Viznatians were temporarily relieved when, in the Battle of Angora in 1402, Timur invaded Anatolia. He captured Sultan Bayazit I. After 1402, the Ottoman Empire lost some of its territories in the Balkans (such as Thessaloniki, Macedonia, and Kosovo), but they were recovered by Murat the Second between the 1530s and 1550s. Year of publication: 1730/31.
