| Sample Text | The debate over the true successor of Muhammad led to the formation of two main sects, the Sunnis and the Shiites. The Sunnis, or followers of the path, followed the caliphate and maintained the premise that any devout Muslim could potentially become Muhammad's successor if accepted by his countrymen. Shiites, however, believe that only the one chosen by God and appointed by the prophet can become his successor, so Ali became the religious authority of protection. Many Sunni rulers, who were installed with the help of the military and ruled in the Umayyad state, saw the Shia as a threat to both their political and religious authority.
