| Sample Text | Sunni Muslims refer to various hadiths, or oral traditions, that say Muhammad recommended shura, elections or deliberations, as the best way to make decisions in the community. In terms of succession, he did not name a successor as he expected the community itself to choose a new leader, as was the custom in Arabia at the time. Some Sunnis claim that Muhammad trusted Abu Bakr as his deputy in many affairs; he called upon Abu Bakr to lead the prayers and to make decisions in his (Muhammad's) absence.
