| Sample Text | The initial distinguishing feature of Sunni Islam was that the Sunnis elected a leader by consensus, although the appointment of the leaders of the Islamic community was ultimately left to members of the Prophet's clan as opposed to those who considered Ali the legitimate heir or one to whom the mantle of leadership was intended. This immediately affected the later generations at the very beginning of the Islamic community. Although it was a fairly small group in the beginning, the Islamic uma (community) grew very quickly into a global community of Muslims. Year of publication: 1577. |
