| Sample Text | The case of Iraq illustrates how there can be significant differences based on religion in the way Arabic is spoken. (This study was conducted before the American occupation of this country). In Baghdad, there is a significant linguistic difference between the Arab Christian and Muslim inhabitants of the city. Christians in Baghdad form a well-to-do community and their dialect has evolved from the sedentary speech of urban medieval Iraq. The typical Muslim dialect of Baghdad arrived in the city later and is derived from Bedouin speech. |
