| Sample Text | Although attractive to some, Sufi practice is not a means of acquiring knowledge. Traditional scholars of Sufism consider it completely undeniable that the realization of God is not a psychological state that is acquired by controlling breathing. Accordingly, the application of the technique is not the cause, but instead the opportunity for such knowledge to be acquired (if it occurs at all) given the right tools and teacher guidance along the way. In addition, overemphasizing the practical approach can obscure a far more important fact: the seeker should, in the original sense, become a broken person, deprived of all habits through the exercises (in the words of Imam al-Ghazali) of solitude, silence, sleeplessness and hunger.
